Lately

Nordic Fusionist vodkas

The Nordic Fusionist vodkas had a magnificent day view at Phare du Kanaal Christmas market. The winter batches are now sold out, with Pearnilla (Pear, vanilla and cardamom) being the frontrunner. Thanks a ton to everyone who came, and keep an eye out for the spring creations. We… Read More

Nördic coffee

| Guest post by Johanna | In order to survive the long, grey Belgian winter or the even longer, dark and absolutely freezing Scandinavian winter, one develops certain survival techniques. Of these, my absolute favorite, has to be the consumption of a warm beverage with… Read More

Wild elderflower vodka (flädersnaps)

Elderflower has a near mythical status in Sweden. Blooming in June, it dots the midsummer nights with a dusky light. Way back, women would make sacrifices to the bushes in an attempt to woo “hyllekvinnan” an elderflower godess of fertility. Most everything about the Swedish summer is centered around… Read More

Sakagura – authentic Japanese in Congrès

On an anonymous side street between De Brouckere and Congrès, next to office blocks and empty car parks, one finds the simple Japanese restaurant Sakagura. Despite its modest appearance, eating here is a culinary pleasure, and for very reasonable prices. Walking around the empty office blocs by night the… Read More

Greek delicacies at Ergon, Brussels

Ergon is a very humble-looking Greek deli, but don’t let this fool you. Grab a seat inside the light, loud shop, and you can be served the most impressive delicacies. Their balsamic-glazed grilled octopus with fava bean puré and fried bean balls is a sweet, smoky… Read More

Steamy noodles at Umamido, Flagey

Huge bowls of Japanese noodle soup with pork neck and all the trimmings. Cycling in Brussels offers a new kind of cold, which makes a Swede feel almost at home. Freezing my fingers off whilst battling grey traffic every morning brings on strong a strong longing for Umamido in… Read More

Seven plates at Gramm, Brussels

Places like Gramm are special. Eating their five-course tasting menu (with a cute amuse bouche and a cheese board), is not dinner. It is something else. Attention has gone inte every tiny detail on the plate, and the flavours are innovative, yet go together perfectly. Gramm… Read More

Irish coffee

Velvety cream, hot coffee, whiskey and brown sugar – you’re always bound for a good place with these ingredients. The only “trick” there is for Irish coffee (if it can be called a trick), is to use full fat cream. Spray cream should not come near… Read More

Growing oyster mushrooms

Growing mushrooms is very exciting. It reminds me of being all small in a natural history museum, yet you are at home, and can watch the process from your sofa (or wherever you choose to grow your babies). Brussels startup Permafungi collects used coffee grounds and mixes it with mushroom mycelium in… Read More

Places to eat in Brussels

Hej

I’m a Swedish food nerd living in Brussels, writing about Swedish traditional cooking (husmanskost) and great restaurants. Sometimes I go foraging, and I’m currently attempting to grow vegetables on my terrace. I’m a weekday veggie, but love a bloody steak.
